Burial of Terrestrial Organic Matter in Marine Sediments: A Re-Assessment

چکیده

[1] Calculations based on recent observations indicate that approximately one third of the organic matter presently being buried in marine sediments may be of terrestrial origin, with the majority of this terrestrial organic matter (TOM) burial occurring in muddy, deltaic sediments. These calculations further suggest that the remineralization of terrestrial organic matter in the oceans is also much less efficient than that of marine organic matter. These two underappreciated observations have important implications in terms of our understanding of the controls on the global carbon cycle. From a paleoceanographic perspective, the results presented here also suggest that changes in TOM burial on glacial-interglacial timescales have the potential to impact the global carbon cycle (i.e., atmospheric CO2 levels).

Production and preservation of organic matter: The significance of iron

[1] ‘‘Iron fertilization’’ has been previously recognized as a potential mechanism for enhanced organic matter burial in marine sediments. However, the singular view of iron as a control on primary production overlooks its role in sedimentary diagenesis, a factor that must be evaluated when considering organic matter accumulation. This study examines the role of iron as a buffer of pore water s...

Preferential sequestration of terrestrial organic matter in boreal lake sediments

The molecular composition and origin has recently been demonstrated to play a critical role in the persistence of organic matter in lake water, but it is unclear to what degree chemical attributes and sources may also control settling and burial of organic matter in lake sediments. Here we compared the annual contribution of allochthonous and autochthonous sources to the organic matter settling...

Preservation of organic matter in marine sediments: controls, mechanisms, and an imbalance in sediment organic carbon budgets?

The burial of organic matter (OM) in marine sediments represents the major link between “active” surface pools of carbon in the oceans, atmosphere, on land, and in marine sediment, and carbon pools that cycle on much longer, geologic time scales (i.e., carbon in sedimentary rock, coal, and petroleum deposits). It also plays some role in controlling atmospheric CO2 and O2 on these long time scal...

Global pulses of organic carbon burial in deep-sea sediments during glacial maxima.

The burial of organic carbon in marine sediments removes carbon dioxide from the ocean-atmosphere pool, provides energy to the deep biosphere, and on geological timescales drives the oxygenation of the atmosphere. Here we quantify natural variations in the burial of organic carbon in deep-sea sediments over the last glacial cycle. Using a new data compilation of hundreds of sediment cores, we s...
